Just recently, we have got back into our canoes after a break of several years.
We took up canoeing when our son started paddling with the Scouts at Camp Wray on the banks of Windermere. I wasn’t comfortable in a kayak, so we had a go in a Grumman open canoe and enjoyed greatly. While this sort of canoe is frequently called a “Canadian”, the term used within the canoeing fraternity is “Open”.
We started out with a 17 foot Old Town, but as our skills increased, together with the arguments about poor direction coming from the rear of the boat (me), we decided to get one each. Angela paddles a Pyranha Traveller 15, while mine is a Dagger Reflection 15. Both have plenty of room for two, but are also ideal for solo paddling.
On these pages are photographs from some of the trips we’ve had, from week-long canoe camping trips to days out.
